Remembering Together Shetland comes to a close

For Phase 2 of Remembering Together Shetland Arts commissioned 5 artists to respond creatively to the phase 1 report which was compiled by Christina Inkster, after delivering Phase 1. Four content captures were also communitined to document the process and activity, allowing the artists’ process of responding to be the basis of a book and a film.

The book will then be placed in public locations around Shetland, creating a lasting memorial. Some of the artists worked with community groups during their process, while others responded purely through their chosen art form.

Renzo Spiteri created an album which can be listened to while reading the book, either through QR codes which are in the book, or through the CD that will be attached in the front cover.

Helen Robertson created plaques which have been distributed to each community council across Shetland. These consisted of metal wire knitting, glass in collaboration with Glansin Glass and wooden bases provided by Paparwark.

Heather Christie created a map and leaflet that promoted Self Care on the island of Bressay. She worked with community groups to establish where to highlight on the map and what brought them joy through lockdown, which then was incorporated into the map. This map is now on display on the ferry terminal. Heather also did an exhibition of her findings at Speldiburn community centre in Bressay.

Malcolm Innes’ project had 2 parts: Together and Apart. Together was a live projection event that showcased projection and music on the side of Mareel which took place in March just before the clocks changed, allowing us to have an appropriate time of performance in an appropriate level of darkness for the projection to be visible. For ‘Apart’, Malcolm made projection on abandoned buildings around Shetland. Images of which are collated in the book.

JJ Jamieson worked with Liz Musser to film 6 local people’s reaction to sound recordings from the time of lockdown. This is a reflective film, titled ‘Connected Memory’ that captures many of the feelings expressed and felt in and around lockdown and beyond. This film has been on exhibition at Mareel for 4 months.

Shetland Arts is hosting a Remembering Together exhibition in Mareel that will showcase each artists’ work through 6 large print images, and any additional work they wish to exhibit. Each artist will have a 2 month long exhibition which will also highlight passers-by's attention to the book which will be available to peruse in Mareel cafe.

The content captures working with the artists were: Niamh Wylie, photographer,            Chloe Keppie, book designer, Genevieve White, writer and Liz Musser, filmmaker.

The book can be accessed HERE and a hard copy is available in libraries across Shetland.
