Meet the Artist: RIG Arts
Remembering Together: Inverclyde have appointed their artist to co-create memorials with communities. Meet RIG Arts
RIG Arts is a socially engaged arts charity based in Inverclyde that brings professional artists and the community together in collaborative and creative ways.
Since 2011 RIG has identified and served the need for regular creative interventions with a diverse range of people to build social cohesion through strong community and partner collaborations deeply rooted in place.
RIG Arts is passionate about using creativity to make a positive difference in people’s lives and their environments through co-designing and delivering a dynamic programme of arts and film projects, workshops, exhibitions, public artworks, community spaces and public events.
RIG Arts approach to Remembering Together is to develop wide reaching creative consultation through a multifaceted approach to represent a cross section of Inverclyde’s demographics including marginalised communities.
This will be achieved through working with local people, having engaging conversations and developing creative activities to reflect on the impact of Covid on their lives. Artists will work with the community exploring how these feelings and ideas can be best represented through co-created Covid Community Memorials.
RIG Arts will adopt a hybrid approach of public and targeted group sessions both physically and digitally. We will go out into communities to engage people and all identified access barriers will be tackled to embed inclusivity into the heart of the project.
Creative workshops will establish a safe and positive environment to allow open conversations. They will be designed to be light-hearted and therapeutic not only encouraging reflection, allowing everyone to remember and honour those affected by Covid but also giving participants an opportunity to destress and to maintain positive wellbeing.
Activities will be interactive and fun to also capture and celebrate the amazing community spirit that has been demonstrated in Inverclyde. There will be ongoing evaluation to ensure that all key feelings, themes and ideas are recorded to feed into a co-created Covid community memorial for Inverclyde. All options will be explored with local people and all opinions will be recorded.
RIG Arts CEO Karen Orr says:
“We wanted to be a part of Remembering Together because we believe in the importance of reflection on the impacts of Covid and empowering communities to creatively mark this period in their own special and unique way. As RIG Arts is based in Inverclyde we are delighted to have this opportunity to work with the wider population and honoured to be able to represent their concepts.”
