A Tree of Remembrance, co-creating in Dumfries and Galloway

Artists t s Beall and Katie Anderson are working in Dumfries & Galloway to co-create with communities, exploring who, what, and how we want to remember and honour all those affected by Covid.

As part of the project, Tara and Katie are bringing a sculptural Tree of Remembrance to a variety of public events and activities, and delivering printmaking workshops to help individuals and groups to share their experiences and ideas for a Covid memorial for the region. A series of drop-in workshops and conversational spaces are being held from September to November at public events, alongside a programme of workshops which are taking place across the region.

Recent events have included visiting Stranraer as part of the Unexpected Garden’s Harvest Festival, Wigtown for the Book Festival and Kirkcudbright as part of their Festival of Light, with other dates and locations to come. The workshops have included working with students from Dumfries and Galloway College’s Art and Design department, conversations with the Dumfries and Galloway Carer’s Network, and NHS staff at the Galloway Community Hospital and DGRI at Cargenbridge, Dumfries.

Events still to come include activities in Sanquhar, Langholm, New Galloway and Castle Douglas, with a combination of focused workshops with community groups, and open sessions at public events. Additionally, a series of ‘postboxes’ will be launched at various public buildings across the region from end-October where ideas and proposals can be shared from those unable to attend in-person activities.
